creative process & techniques

The pots are thrown off the hump from a porcelain body and cut and assembled when hard enough. Naomi carves out square bases on some bowls and pots such as teabowls. The sushi plates are rolled out and cut.

The decoration is added at the leather hard stage using sgraffito techniques and coloured slips in various combinations to achieve depth and surface interest.

After the pots are bisqued, they are glazed with wood ash glazes using ash which is recovered from the wood stove that heats the studio in winter. The pots are then loaded into the kiln and fired to cone 9 in an oxidation atmosphere. Having been fired to this high temperature, the ware resists chipping and is dishwasher safe.
